The caller sounded very excited. Her daughter had an all-time favorite baby quilt like the one she found on our website. Her daughter loved it so much that the baby quilt was used as a tablecloth at her wedding reception.

I was intrigued. Must have been a pastel double wedding ring baby quilt, or maybe one of our lovely pastel alphabet quilts. 

Now 11 years after the wedding, the daughter was expecting and Mom was so happy to have found another Daisy Duck baby quilt to give to her granddaughter, almost exactly like the one her daughter loved when she grew up!

As a fan of Donald, anyone who loves Daisy is a special friend of mine, and to know this is a Mom who is getting the quilt for a granddaughter because Mom grew up with a similar baby quilt and is expecting any day - well, it just doesn't get better.

I remember when I bought this vintage baby quilt. I picked it up from an estate sale because - well, I love ducks, and I love daisies. There is something quite charming about this design, as well as contemporary about the fabric color choices of pink and lime green. When I added this vintage baby quilt to our inventory, I was imagining this as a quilt wall hanging in a nursery, keeping a baby company in a nursery with walls painted yellow. The walls could also have been purple, or green but in my mind, they were yellow.

I should have asked about the nursery wall colors, I thought to myself with a chuckle as I was carefully folding the quilt. 

I packed the Daisy Duck baby quilt in a plastic bag temporarily for safe shipping. No quilts should be kept in plastic for any length of time, they are best stored in cotton, such as pillow cases. I also tucked a yellow duck toy inside to carry the gift tag and quilt care guide to Daisy Duck baby quilt's new home.

The toy also keeps the quilt company on their trip. I mean, honestly, who likes to travel alone?!

I know, here I am telling you not to store quilts in plastic and I just wrapped a personalized Alphabet in Clouds baby quilt in two plastic bags.

It's temporary, just for shipping in the event the box gets damaged. It happens very infrequently but when it does, I don't want our customers getting a damaged gift quilt at their end.

Once you get the quilt, remove from plastic and discard. To best store the quilt, fold like a sleeping bag. If you want to protect it, tuck the quilt into s cotton pillow case or wrap in a piece of cotton fabric.

A customer recently asked why some of our baby crib quilts are so bright. She was looking for an airplane baby quilt but wasn't sure non-pastel options would work.

It's a wonderful question because we used to only carry soft, pastel-colored baby quilts and crib quilts. Then a distraught aunt called us to say her nephew's birthday was coming up and she needed to replace his favorite blanket because one couldn't see the pattern. The baby quilt was only 2 years old.

There are several steps to making our quilts and baby quilts. There are also several steps to packing the quilts for shipping, in this case a yellow rag baby crib quilt going east to welcome a new nephew or niece.

Our baby quilts are offered both alone and as gift sets, which include a complimentary toy. For this gift set, I found a blue green bunny toy to keep the baby quilt company on its voyage. Besides keeping the baby quilt company, the toy is responsible for the blank gift card I usually tie in a ribbon around its neck.

Rabbit toy has gift tag and we also include a certified quilt care card with quilt information.

Humm, that doesn't look quite right. Although light blue ribbon is our company ribbon, it looked too "boyish." This was supposed to be a gender-neutral gift.

Back to the ribbon bin to try something else.

Now the rabbit toy is modeling a new ribbon option, a yellow ribbon to match the baby quilt.

Much better, this ribbon pops against the blue green toy color and nicely matches the yellow rag baby quilt, I like the yellow ribbon, don't you? 

One additional benefit, this ribbon is wired at the edges so it can be easily fluffed up once it is removed from the box.

Ok, time to tuck the toy into the baby rag quilt and get it ready for shipping.

How to Store Quilts Reminder

We ship our quilts in plastic just in case something happens to a box corner. Quilts should not be stored in plastic. A good alternative is to store quilts in cotton pillow cases rolled up like a sleeping bag so no creases establish themselves. It's all in the enclosed free custom quilt guide.

Girls Like Peter Rabbit, Too!

We added a pink border so little girls can have a Peter Rabbit crib quilt in their girly nursery.

One of our repeat customers reminded me a few years back that sometimes we assume some colors are only for a particular gender. Blue, for example, is only a "boy" color or pink is only a "girl" color. With this in mind, we made one of our Peter Rabbit crib quilts with a pink border so a little girl can have this charming Beatrix Potter crib quilt in her pink-colored nursery.

Pink is not just for girls. Many fashion-forward men wear pink shirts, and last year we made a quilt for a teenager who wanted pink as a border to fit into his avant guard room decor.

What To Do with Extra Quilt Panels

Sometimes when making a quilt from printed panels, you end up with an extra quilt block or two. In this case, we had two extra blocks, both too cute to pitch.

We used the extra blocks to make a matching pillow for a quilt destined to become a nursery wall hanging. It's a reversible pillow, with a cat on one side, a dog on the other.

To make sure the baby quilt lives a versatile life, we also added a 3-inch sleeve on the back so the baby quilt can easily be hung on a curtain rod. When not in use, the sleeve lays flat against the back and is almost invisible.

Nothing like being cute, and practical.

Fixing Noah's Ark Quilt

Over the year, I have periodically repaired a variety of quilts, from museum-quality to well loved ones. None, however, where in the condition of this vintage Noah's Ark printed panel baby quilt, with a matching printed cotton on the back.

When Dad contacted me about making the repairs, I said I was willing to look at the quilt to see if it was possible to salvage. The front was torn and worn; the back had several bad spots so we basically had to take the quilt apart and make a new one from the remaining pieces.

Luckily I was able to find another matching Noah's Ark panel for the front and I pieced the best of the packing fabric into a new back, adding a very soft blue cotton on either side to protect the center pieces from wear. A little machine quilting in a similar pattern as the original, with the same polyfill, and the quilt was "good as new!"

Re-Purpose Clothes Into Custom Quilts
Recycling clothing into quilts is a good way to preserve special memories and reuse clothing. Over the years, we've made a number of quilts out of clothes including wedding dresses, favorite khakis, shirts and blouses, baby and children's clothes, handkerchiefs, table cloths - if it's made out of fabric, it can be made into a custom quilt. Because these quilts are custom, no two are exactly alike. We offer these custom clothes quilts as ideas to get you started thinking about what kind of custom quilt you would like us to make for you. One of Bluebird Gardens customer favorite combinations is to take a few favorite clothing pieces and add photos printed onto fabric. Custom Clothing Quilts have also been made into quilted wall hangings when we've added a sleeve on the back so the finished quilt can easily be hung on a wall for a room focal point.

Custom Patchwork Block Quilts
Customers have also sent us men's suits, shirts, t-shirts and ties we've made into custom patchwork block quilts. On the back side, we added ties with embroidered names of the individuals getting the clothing memory quilts. These custom patchwork block quilts feature patchwork blocks on the front and variable sized clothing blocks on the back, making these quilts easily reversible.

Wedding and bride's maid dresses are good candidates for custom quilts and throws. Depending on fabrics in the dresses, many can be preserved in custom patchwork quilts. Some dresses, made out of organza and silk, may not be the best candidates for custom quilts.
